Let’s face it: the role of in-house lawyers has never been more complex. It is no longer limited to ensuring that the organisation meets its legal obligations nor providing legal advice on how the law applies or impacts business operations and plans. Not only has the role expanded to new matters such as compliance, human rights, personal data protection, cybersecurity, etc., but it now requires the ability to navigate soft law, negotiate with a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., public authorities, NGOs), understand geopolitical forces, capture and make sense of weak signals, and act as risk managers as well as project leaders. The expectations on in-house lawyers are huge… and so are the uncertainties, challenges, and risk factors of the external environment.
