The UK Arbitration Bill : what do you need to know?

On 18 July 2024, the Arbitration Bill was introduced in the House of Lords. The aim of the Bill is to update the current arbitral framework, the Arbitration Act 1996 (“Act”), to enable more efficient dispute resolution, attract international legal business, and promote UK economic growth. The draft Bill follows recommendations from the Law Commission, following two public consultations involving 118 arbitration practitioners, including the ICC International Court of Arbitration (“ICC”) and ICC United Kingdom, lending their diverse experiences and knowledge to the Law Commission’s endeavours.

Colleen Parker Bacquet works at the Secretariat of the ICC Court of Arbitration as counsel of the Common law case management team dealing primarily with disputes arising out of the UK, Ireland and Africa. In her role as Counsel at the ICC Court, Colleen supervises a high volume of arbitration cases, and is involved in the scrutiny of arbitral awards as well as weekly Court sessions. In addition to overseeing the administration of cases in the team, Colleen has been involved in providing trainings to states and to practitioners as part of the ICC’s Advanced Arbitration Academy in Africa.

Ashleigh Brocchieri is Expert Counsel at the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, based at headquarters in Paris. She acts as subject matter expert on practices and procedures for Dispute Resolution Services, as well as in key projects, notably in relation to digital transformation.
